Womb Dreams

When I tell a friend
about my dreams of floating
in black emptiness
and how I wake feeling soothed,
she says, “Oh, those are womb dreams.”

Is this how mothers
hold their daughters when the cord
is cut and distance
climbs into their empty arms
and nestles against their hearts?
